Birmingham Belle

Deep within the "Heart of Dixie"
Vulcan stares down upon a small college
Where top MD's are made
And within a small private room
Overlooking the old stomping grounds
Of this here Party Kid
A young woman whimpers as she becomes
A little girl reduced to helplessness
And loneliness that no one else can adhere
Deep within the "Heart of Dixie"
A New York specialist is confused
Upon his findings two elements don't add up
Exhausted he recedes into deep thought
"Why and how is this young woman here?"
"These two results don't add up."
And his contemplation is overrun by slumber
A mature woman intrudes
The days have been hard on her
She can't sleep or eat
All she can do is watch as her baby writhes in pain
Feeling helpless she asks
"Is there an answer?"
"Can she now be treated?"
"I don't know"
"Tis enigma has baffled me."
replies the doctor
And as those words escape his lips
Her heart stops and drops
Three stories to the ground floor
Deep in the "Heart of Dixie"
The mature woman sobs quietly in the bathroom
And as she splashes water on her face
Wiping the "water-proof mascara" running down the rivers of tears
Her thoughts wonder to her other two
The "little one" only seven
And now has to understand what not even her Grandparents
Watching her cannot
An hour away unable to be comforted by her embrace
And her "Boy in Blue" the drifter
Ten hours away being kept in the dark
Only able to call every three days
The drifter's thoughts are of his loved one
Lying in a bed awaiting the next procedure
Deep in the "Heart of Dixie"
The drifter wishes to be there
Hoping not to be too late
Praying for the best
Not knowing the whole story
This time his mind's not on home
This time his heart is with her
Deep in the "Heart of Dixie"
